Directional Driller: What the Job Actually Involves
The directional driller is the person who gets a well from point A to point B along a path that was never straight. On a modern horizontal pad, that means steering a bit through reservoir-quality rock thousands of feet from surface, using either a bent mud motor with slide drilling or a rotary steerable system. It is part engineering, part piloting, and the pay reflects the fact that a missed target zone is a costly mistake.

What the Job Actually Involves
Before the bit trips in, the directional driller builds the well plan. That starts with the survey program and the anti-collision scans, because on a multi-well pad every new well is drilled within feet of wells that are already producing. From there, the job breaks into three phases:
- Planning. Set inclination, azimuth, and build rates, and define the targets the drilling team will be measured against.
- Steering. During drilling, either slide with a bent-housing mud motor or steer with a rotary steerable system. The choice sets rate of penetration, hole quality, and cost.
- Monitoring. Read survey data, gamma ray, and resistivity in near-real time, adjust the trajectory, and keep the well inside the target window while the formation tries to push it out.
The daily cadence is a 12-hour tour with a handover at every change. The directional driller logs each connection, takes surveys at the operator's interval, usually one stand of pipe, watches the gamma response, and files a directional report that becomes the record of the wellpath. Slide Drilling vs Rotary Steerable
Most of the practical difference in the job comes down to how the well is steered. Slide drilling uses a mud motor with a bent housing. The string does not rotate while the motor turns the bit, which lets the driller point the bit in a chosen direction. It is simpler and cheaper, but it is slower, and the non-rotating string makes hole cleaning harder.
Rotary steerable systems rotate the whole string while steering. That means better hole cleaning, higher rates of penetration, and smoother curves, at a higher daily cost. Working With the Crew
The directional driller does not work alone. The MWD hand runs the survey tool and manages the downhole data. The geosteering specialist reads the formation and adjusts the target interpretation. The driller executes the steering instructions at the controls, and the company man holds the cost line and the authority. A directional driller who cannot communicate with all four is a liability no matter how clean the well plans look.

Directional drillers work field rotations like everyone else, typically 14 days on and 14 off, with 12-hour days and a phone that rings on off days when the well misbehaves. Entry-level hands at zero to two years earn around $900 a day, and mid-career hands at three to seven years run around $1,300 a day, per Rigzone's directional driller salary data. From there the path splits. Some move up to senior directional driller and then into coordination or operations, running the service company's jobs across a region. What Operators Should Look For
Hire for judgment, not just hours. A directional driller with 10,000 hours of slide drilling is less valuable than one who has handled a bad hole, a lost tool, and a geosteering miss, because those are the situations where the job earns or loses its day rate. Ask for case histories, not just a resume.
Demand written well plans and survey programs you can audit, and treat the anti-collision scan as a deliverable, not a checkbox.
