Drill Pipe Inspection: API RP 7G-2 and the Drill String
Drill pipe carries the weight of the string, transmits torque, and circulates the mud that cleans the hole. When a joint fails, the result is a fishing job, lost time, and at worst a dropped string that costs the program millions. Inspection is the practice that catches fatigue before it becomes failure, and the industry standard for it is API RP 7G-2.
Why Pipe Fails
Drill pipe lives a hard life. It is rotated under load, bent through doglegs, and cycled through tension and compression on every trip. The failure mechanisms are well understood:
- Corrosion fatigue: pitting and stress concentrations that grow into cracks.
- Cyclic stress: repeated bending that fatigues the tube and tool joints.
- Wear: abrasion against casing and open hole that thins the pipe wall.
- Overload: torque or tension beyond the string's rated limits.
Most failures do not announce themselves. A crack grows quietly over many cycles and parts under a routine load, which is why visual inspection alone is never enough. The defects live inside the tube wall, in the tool joints, and at the connections, and they need magnetic particle, ultrasonic, or electromagnetic inspection to be found.
What API RP 7G-2 Requires
API RP 7G-2 is the recommended practice for drill stem design and operating limits, and it specifies inspection levels for used drill pipe. The practice defines what must be checked, the procedures for each inspection level, and how results are classified. A pipe that passes inspection gets a class designation, usually premium or class 2, and that class determines how it can be used.
- Premium class pipe has no defects below a defined threshold and can be run at full rated capacity.
- Class 2 pipe carries reduced allowable loads and is typically used in lower-risk sections.
- Inspections cover the tube body, tool joints, and connections, not just the outside of the pipe.
The classification matters for the same reason torque limits matter: the string is only as strong as its weakest joint. Running mixed classes without tracking which joints are where creates a hidden weak point in the string. The Inspection Process
A full drill pipe inspection follows a defined sequence, usually at a pipe yard or service facility:
- Cleaning and visual inspection for gross damage and wear.
- Dimensional checks on tube OD, wall thickness, and tool joint OD.
- Electromagnetic or ultrasonic inspection of the tube body for cracks and wall loss.
- Magnetic particle inspection of tool joints and connections.
- Thread inspection and gauge checks on the connections.
- Grading the pipe and marking the class on each joint.
The frequency depends on pipe condition, service history, and the operator's program. Pipe that runs in corrosive mud or harsh directional wells gets inspected more often than pipe on benign vertical programs. The rule is simple: when in doubt, inspect, because one failed joint costs more than a full yard inspection.
The Cost of Skipping Inspection
Skipping an inspection saves a few thousand dollars and risks a fishing job that runs into the hundreds of thousands. A twist-off in a 12,000-foot horizontal lateral means fishing tools, jarring runs, possible sidetrack, and days of rig time at $30,000-plus per day. The arithmetic is never close.
The same logic applies to torque. A string run past its make-up torque limits can part at the connection, and the API worked examples show how quickly calculated limits tighten as pipe class and condition change. Running premium pipe at its full rating is only valid if the pipe is actually premium, which is what inspection confirms.
Records Make Inspection Useful
Inspection results matter most when they are recorded and tracked. A good pipe inventory system knows each joint's serial number, class, inspection date, and run history. That record answers the questions that come up on every program:
- Which joints are due for inspection before the next well?
- Which strings can carry the planned torque and tension?
- What does the dull and wear history say about the drilling parameters?

Drill pipe is a capital asset with a defined fatigue life, and inspection is how that life is managed instead of gambled.
