Emergency Showers and Eyewash Stations at the Rig: Location, Flushing and Inspections
Acids, hydrotest fluids, solvents, treating chemicals and produced fluids all burn skin and damage eyes fast. Emergency showers and eyewash stations exist to stop that damage in the first fifteen seconds. A rig site that stores chemicals, runs acids or performs well stimulation treatments must have stations that workers can reach without turning handles, running upstairs or asking for permission. Anything between the injured worker and the water is a delay the standard does not allow. The rules require specific flow rates, spray patterns and flush times. An eyewash station must deliver 0.4 gallons per minute for at least fifteen minutes. An emergency shower must deliver at least 20 gallons per minute for a minimum of fifteen minutes. That water must be tepid; extreme cold or hot water increases tissue damage and makes victims step away before the flush is complete. The stations also need signage, clear paths and regular inspections. A unit behind a pallet of pipe or blocked by a coiled hose does not exist for an injured worker who cannot see it. Weekly inspections catch failures before they become tragedies. Tags should show the inspector name, date and flush result. Annual testing proves flow rate and temperature. If a station fails, the crew needs an alternate response plan until repairs are made. That includes spare units, transport to a medical facility and trained responders who know how long the flush should last. When eyewash and shower equipment is treated like a fire extinguisher that never gets checked, the next chemical exposure becomes the reason the company learns the standard the hard way. First aid training should cover chemical exposure response, not just bandages and CPR. A worker who gets acid in the eye needs someone who can guide them to the station, hold the eyelids open and call for transport. That requires practice. Drills that skip chemical exposure because they seem unlikely are drills that leave the crew unprepared for the very event the eyewash station was bought to handle. A company that tracks first aid drills, eyewash inspections and medical kit inventories shows regulators it treats exposure seriously. A company that only buys the hardware and forgets the habit will learn the difference in a liability claim. Temperature control deserves more attention than it gets. In winter, outdoor eyewash water can drop toward freezing and drive the victim away. In summer, black hoses on a rig floor can turn water hot enough to worsen burns. Insulation, recirculating systems and tepid-water delivery keep the station usable when the weather turns. Those controls should be inspected with the same frequency as the flow rate.
