Frac Support Operations: Coordinating Water, Sand, and Crews
A hydraulic fracturing job is a logistics event with a well in the middle. The pumps are the visible part, but behind them is a supply chain moving millions of gallons of water and millions of pounds of sand to one location, on a clock measured in hours, with a frac spread that bills whether it pumps or waits. The crews that win at completions are the ones that treat the water and sand like the critical path, because they are.
The scale of the move
Shale completions are volume operations. The USGS puts water use per well between 1.5 million and 16 million gallons, depending on the formation and the stage count. Sand follows the same curve: shale gas wells can use more than 4 million pounds of proppant per well, with conventional wells at a few hundred thousand. Every gallon and every pound arrives by truck. A single pad completion means thousands of truck movements, and each movement has to land in the right order.
Who has to be there, and when
The frac support cast is long: water haulers, sand trucks, hot oil units, transfer pumps, hoses, tanks, and the crews to run them. The sequence matters as much as the volumes. Water has to be in the tanks before the pumps come on location. Sand has to be staged before the blender starts. If the sequence slips, the spread waits, and the NPT math on this site applies to completions exactly as it does to drilling: waiting on third-party services is the most fixable category of lost time, and it is almost always a coordination failure.
Waiting time is the NPT of completions
Frac spreads run on a schedule measured in stages per day, and every hour of waiting kills the stage count. The causes are familiar to anyone who has run a spread: water trucks arriving late or in the wrong quantity, sand supply running dry mid-stage, transfer crews not staged, tickets that do not match what actually delivered. Scheduling the pad
Operators that run tight completions do three things. They publish the stage-by-stage schedule so every supplier knows the sequence. They reconcile water and sand at the pad, delivery by delivery, so the inventory matches the plan. And they close each stage with a ticket that is accurate enough to invoice without a phone call.
