Mast Raising and Setup Safety

Raising the mast is one of the highest-risk operations on a rig move because gravity, wind and inertia all act at the same time. The mast goes from horizontal to vertical in a controlled sequence that depends on wire rope tension, gin-pin placement, tagline control and weather limits. A crew that skips the pre-raise inspection or ignores the wind limit is a crew that is trusting luck instead of procedure. Mast-raising injuries are usually severe because the mast mass is measured in tons and the worker is not. Pre-raise inspection covers the gin-pin assembly, sheaves, wire rope, winch, snub lines, taglines and the mast structure itself. The gin-pin should be seated, pinned and checked for cracks. The wire rope should show no kinks, birdcages or corrosion, and the winch brake should hold the load without drift. Snub lines should be routed away from the boom path and attached to anchor points that are rated for dynamic loads. The mast should be checked for loose components, pipe racks and handrails that could interfere with the rotation. Any loose item that can fall should be secured before the mast moves. Wind limits should be stated in the rig move plan and enforced by the person in charge. A gusty day that starts mild can change before the mast reaches vertical. The crew should monitor wind speed with a hand-held anemometer or the rig weather station and stop the raise if the limit is reached. Taglines should be attached to both the top and bottom of the mast so workers on the ground can guide the rotation without entering the swing radius. A tagline that is too long or too short defeats its purpose. The person handling the tagline should stay clear of the boom and the gin-pin. Communication and timing control the sequence. The winch operator, the signal person and the tagline handlers should use a single agreed signal set and confirm it before the first pull. The raise should be slow and steady, with pauses at critical angles to check stress, wire rope spooling and gin-pin behavior. When the mast is within a few degrees of vertical, the gin-pin is pulled and the mast settles onto the truck frame or sub-structure. That settling should be checked for alignment and support before the mast is bolted or pinned in place. A mast that is pinned before it is fully aligned bends pins and stresses welds. Raising discipline is part of the same safety system as structural inspections in derrick inspection red-flag conditions.
