Hearing Loss on Location: When Audiometric Testing Becomes Required

Rig engines, pumps, drawworks, generators, compressor packages and pipe handling all produce noise that damages hearing before the worker feels it. The damage is permanent and it accumulates shift by shift. OSHA sets an 85-decibel action level over an 8-hour time-weighted average, with a 5-decibel exchange rate that cuts exposure time in half for every 5-decibel increase. A rig floor that measures 102 decibels during pipe tripping gives the crew less than 15 minutes of unprotected exposure before the legal limit is reached. That reality is why hearing protection and a written program are required. The hearing conservation program has five parts: noise monitoring, engineering and administrative controls, hearing protection, audiometric testing and training. Noise surveys should be updated when equipment changes, when new pipes or drawworks are added, and when enclosures are removed. Engineering controls include quieter pumps, acoustic enclosures and barriers that reduce the sound reaching the worker before personal protective equipment is needed. Administrative controls move workers out of the highest-noise areas during peak tasks. When those controls cannot reduce exposure below the action level, hearing protection becomes mandatory, not optional. Audiometric testing catches loss early. Baseline tests should happen within six months of first exposure, with annual follow-ups. A 10-decibel standard threshold shift requires follow-up audiograms, refitting of hearing protection, and notification of the affected worker. If the company never stores those audiograms, the test never happened. Supervisors should treat the audiometric record like any other medical document: private, accurate and current. Workers who believe hearing loss is part of the job will not wear plugs consistently. Supervisors who model consistent use of hearing protection set the tone more than any safety poster. A hearing conservation program that is tracked, reviewed and enforced protects the crew and protects the company from recordable cases that drive up insurance and trigger OSHA inspections.
