Rig Crew Fatigue: Shift Length, Rest, and the Drive Home
Long shifts and night tours are normal on a rig. So is the drive home after 12 to 14 hours on the floor. When rest is short and the commute is long, fatigue becomes a safety problem before anyone reaches the truck.
Federal hours-of-service rules limit a commercial driver to 11 hours of driving after 10 consecutive hours off duty, and the driver cannot drive at all once 14 hours of on-duty time have passed. A 30-minute break is required after 8 hours behind the wheel. The rules are published in 49 CFR Part 395.
Why fatigue is a rig problem
Rig work runs on tours, not office hours. Day tours and night tours each run 12 to 14 hours, and the schedule flips back and forth at every crew change. A body that works nights and tries to sleep days never fully adjusts, because the tour rotates again before the sleep cycle settles. Alertness dips in the early morning hours, which is exactly when a night tour is doing heavy work.
The commute makes it worse. Crew members often live an hour or more from the rig, and many drive home straight after their last shift. A tired driver on a two-lane road is the same hazard whether the vehicle is a service rig or a pickup carrying the crew home.
What the hours-of-service rules actually cover
The federal hours-of-service rules in 49 CFR Part 395 apply to drivers of commercial motor vehicles. That covers a lot of oilfield trucks: service rigs, vacuum trucks, water trucks, and crew buses above the weight threshold. The rules cap driving time, on-duty time, and rest between shifts. Part 392 adds a rule that matters here: no driver may operate a commercial vehicle while fatigue makes it unsafe to do so (49 CFR 392.3).
But the rules follow the vehicle, not the job. A roustabout who rides in the crew bus is not a driver under the rules, and a derrick hand who never operates a commercial vehicle has no driving log at all. The hours rules do not cap the length of a rig tour, so a 14-hour day on the floor can still end in a two-hour drive home in a personal vehicle. That gap is where the fatigue risk sits. Rest, sleep debt, and the crew schedule
Sleep debt is the quiet part of the problem. Fourteen days on location with night flips costs more sleep than one day off can repay, and the first nights of a tour are the highest risk window. Rotations exist to manage this: shorter hitches, longer days off, and handovers timed for daylight instead of midnight.
A good rotation also plans the commute. A night tour that ends at 6 a.m. sends tired hands into morning traffic. Ending a tour at midday, or requiring a rest period before the drive, gives the body time to recover. Rest quality matters as much as rest quantity. Crew quarters with noise, heat, and light interruptions produce shallow sleep, and a day off spent driving home is not recovery. Fatigue surveys and fit-for-duty checks are common in drilling operations, but they only work when the schedule gives the crew a real chance to rest. What the operator can record and fix
The first fix is knowing where the hours actually go. Shift start and end times, rest breaks, and drive time should be recorded for every crew member, not reconstructed after the fact. Paper tickets capture the well work but rarely the clock, and handwritten records go missing in trucks and trailers. Rig-site paper tickets cost real money in lost records and late billing.
The data points are simple: who started when, who stopped for rest, and how long the drive home took. With those records, a supervisor can see a pattern of 14-hour days and long commutes and change the rotation before someone drives home exhausted.
