Evacuating the Rig Floor: Alarms, Assembly Points and Drill Records
Fires, kicks, hydrogen sulfide releases and vessel ruptures do not wait for a meeting. An evacuation plan assigns the alarm signals, escape routes, muster points and accounting procedures that keep a rig crew from becoming victims in their own workplace. The plan only works if it is written, drilled and reviewed. An untested plan is a hope. A tested plan is muscle memory. The alarm system should use different signals for different emergencies. A general alarm, a chemical alarm and an abandon-platform signal each mean a different action. Workers should know without thinking whether they grab a life jacket, shut a hatch, activate a deluge system or move to the lifeboat station. Muster points must account for wind direction, secondary hazards and potential explosion zones. A muster point upwind of a release is safe; a muster point downwind is another exposure. Rig designs and pad layouts change that calculation, so muster points should be reviewed after major equipment moves or facility changes. Accounting for every person matters more than speed. Head counts at the muster point, tagged systems and emergency contact lists should all be part of the drill record. Regulators want to see attendance logs, critique notes and corrective actions from drills, not a calendar invite. Drills should happen often enough that new hires learn the procedure before they are trusted on the floor. The drill record becomes evidence that the company trained the crew and tested the plan. An evacuation plan that is not drilled will not hold up during a real emergency. Weather, darkness and fatigue change evacuation behavior. A night drill with rain and wind teaches more than a daytime walkthrough. Crews that practice full gear evacuation, accounting and equipment shutdown in realistic conditions learn where the plan fails. The goal is not perfection; it is improvement. When a drill reveals a missing life jacket, a blocked lifeboat ladder or a supervisor who does not know the muster point, the fix should be written down, assigned and verified before the next quarter. An evacuation plan that survives a bad drill is a plan worth keeping. Equipment shutdown procedures should be part of the evacuation plan, not a separate document. A rig that continues to circulate mud, pump fuel or run generators while the crew is evacuating creates secondary hazards. The plan should name who shuts down what, in what order, and whether anyone stays behind to complete critical isolation. In some emergencies, that isolation is the most important action a worker can take before exiting. The evacuation checklist should be laminated, posted at the muster point and included in the safety orientation.
