Trip Tank Level Readings Best Practices
The trip tank is the rig's truth teller during a round trip. It records exactly how much fluid enters or leaves the active system when pipe is pulled or run. That volume is the difference between a trip that finishes on depth and a trip that finishes in a well-control incident. The best reading practice starts before the first joint is broken out and ends after the last stand is racked. Before the trip starts, the trip tank should be clean, zeroed and visible from the driller's station. The driller should confirm the tank volume reading with the pit volume totalizer. That cross-check removes the risk of a zero offset or a stuck float. During the trip, the pit monitor or the designated observer should call out the trip-tank volume at set intervals, especially when the hole is partially evacuated and the formation has a chance to flow. A quiet rig floor is not the same as a quiet well. The flow check is the critical moment. When the last stand of pipe is out of the hole and the kelly or top drive is shut in, the driller should watch the trip tank and the active pits for flow. A gain in total mud volume means formation fluid is entering the wellbore. That gain must be treated as a kick until proven otherwise. The response is to close the BOP, circulate, or weight up, not to open the well and hope. Trip-tank gain that is smaller than the float error is still gain. The driller should not dismiss a small gain just because the pump is off and the well should be static. Calibration and communication close the loop. The trip tank gauge, float, and totalizer should be calibrated together before the trip begins. The driller, the toolpusher and the company man should agree on the action level for volume gain and loss. That agreement should be written on the drilling report so the night shift does not inherit a different standard. When the trip-tank readings, the mud property updates and the daily drilling report are linked, the decision trail is complete.
