Well Control Drills for Land Crews
Well control on land rigs depends on the same physics as offshore: an influx of formation fluid enters the wellbore because the bottomhole pressure is lower than the reservoir pressure. The difference is the response environment. A land crew cannot rely on automatic choke and kill systems that are common on floating rigs. They rely on the driller, the kelly or top drive, the BOP stack, the choke manifold and the pump crew reacting fast and correctly when the kick shows up. That reaction should be muscle memory, not a discussion. The drill-through procedure is the first drill. The crew should practice shutting in the well, closing the correct preventer, reading the pressures and circulating out the kick with the proper mud weight. The drill should include the diverter line, the choke lineup, the pit volume checks and the kill sheet calculations. A kill sheet that is not current, a choke line that is not sized for the expected rate, or a pump that is not ready will all extend the time the well is shut in and increase the chance of a secondary problem. The crew should run the drill with the actual equipment and the actual lineup, not with a paper exercise. Flow-check procedures are the second drill. The crew should know how to hold the drill string off bottom, close the pipe rams, and observe the pit volume for gain. That observation requires a clear view of the trip tank and active pits, a known baseline volume, and a defined action level. A gain of one barrel is enough to treat as a kick on a small well. The crew should practice the decision tree: confirm gain, shut in, record pressures, notify the company man and prepare to circulate. That sequence should be drilled often enough that the driller does not have to think about it. Communication and documentation support the physical response. The company man, the toolpusher and the mud engineer each have a role during a kick. Their roles should be stated before the kick happens. The daily drilling report should record the flow-check result, the kick volume, the kill mud weight and the final circulating pressure. When the report is missing those numbers, the next crew does not know what the well taught the last crew.
