Lightning and Severe Weather on the Rig: The Call to Stand Down
On flat country, a drilling rig is the tallest thing for miles. The mast is a steel lightning rod by geometry alone, and the pipe racked in it is a conductor waiting for a path to ground. Lightning does not negotiate. It does not wait for the job to reach a safe stopping point. The only safe response is to stop work before the storm gets close, and to make that stop a recorded decision instead of a memory. Here is how a rig crew sets storm triggers, makes the stand-down call, and proves it later.
The National Weather Service counts lightning as one of the most frequent weather killers in the United States, with about 20 deaths a year and hundreds of people injured. A strike can reach more than 10 miles from the storm that produced it, which is why the NWS advice is to go inside at the first sound of thunder, not when the rain starts. NFPA 780, the Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems, sets the requirements for air terminals, conductors, and grounding that protect structures from damage. That system protects equipment and buildings. It is not a license to keep working in the open.
Why the derrick is a lightning target
Lightning picks the easiest path from cloud to ground, and height is the biggest single factor. A rig mast can rise well over 100 feet, and in flat oil country that makes it the highest point on the horizon. The taller the structure, the more likely the strike, which is why the rig and everything near it sits in the target zone.
Then the metal. The derrick, the crown block, the drill line, the racked pipe, the pumps, and the tanks are all connected through the rig's bonding and its ground grid. The rig is one large conductor. A direct strike injects enormous current in microseconds, and that current spreads through every connected piece of steel and into the ground grid. A crew member on the mast, on the drill floor, or anywhere near the conductor path is exposed. A good ground grid carries fault current, but it does not make it safe to be on the steel when the strike comes.
Storm triggers and the stand-down call
The National Weather Service 30-30 rule is the baseline. If you see lightning and hear thunder within 30 seconds, the storm is within about six miles, and you go to shelter. You stay there for 30 minutes after the last thunder. The NWS phrase is simple: when thunder roars, go indoors.
A rig operates to a tighter clock than the baseline. The site plan sets a trigger distance, and when a cell reaches it, work that puts people up high or near moving steel stops. Tripping, racking pipe, running casing, and rigging up all halt. The crane gets its own rules: wind limits come from the load chart, and lightning is an absolute stop condition on top of them. Under OSHA 1926.1419, the operator follows the qualified signalperson, and the stop signal is the one signal nobody questions. The crane lifting plan should say in writing when lifts stop and how loads are secured before the crew leaves the deck.
Who decides and how to make it stick
Anyone on location can call a storm stop. That is the point of stop work authority: the question is never "is this storm close enough," it is "are we doing the right thing by staying up." The rig manager or toolpusher confirms the call and holds the stand-down until the trigger clears. A false alarm costs an hour. A delayed call can cost a life, so no one is second-guessed for stopping early, and no one is pressured to keep running.
Make it stick with communication and habit. The storm plan is part of the shift toolbox talk, and it covers visitors and third-party crews, not just the drill crew. The call goes out over the radio and the PA in plain words: stand down, weather. Everyone moves to the approved shelter, which means a substantial building or an enclosed vehicle, not the open deck and not the area under the mast. If the storm is in the site emergency response plan, the same communication chain that handles a well control event handles the weather call.
Recording the decision
A stand-down that is not recorded is a rumor. The log needs the time the trigger was reached, who called it, who confirmed it, and the time work resumed. The same record protects the crew and the operator: if a strike damages equipment or someone is exposed, the log shows the decision was made and held. Keep it short and factual, the way you would want to read it three months later.
Restarting is a checklist, not a free-for-all. After the last thunder, wait out the 30 minutes, then walk the location. Look for strike damage: scorched paint, tripped breakers, dead electronics, a hot motor. Check the ground grid connections you can see and test critical systems before the first lift. Resume in the planned order and log the restart. If a strike actually hit the rig or a person, treat it as an incident and follow the incident reporting guide before anything else.
