Drones on Location: Part 107, Inspection Flights, and the Footage That Proves It

A drone can inspect a flare stack or a tank battery without a man basket, a permit, or a crew waiting on weather. A small quadcopter with a decent camera covers the spread in minutes and brings back footage that shows every fitting, every weld, and every stain. For field crews that changes how routine inspection gets planned. It also changes what you have to know before you launch, because flying a drone for work is a commercial operation under FAA rules, not a hobby flight.

FAA Part 107 governs commercial small UAS operations in the United States. To fly a drone for work, the remote pilot in command must hold a Part 107 remote pilot certificate issued by the FAA.

What a drone is good for on a location

Start with the places people do not want to climb. A flare stack inspection that used to need a man basket and a crane becomes a hover at the flare tip with the camera aimed down the stack. Tank battery work goes the same way: the roof, the rim seals, the vents, and the thief hatch, all visible from a slow orbit at altitude. Line inspection means flying the flow lines and the right of way looking for leaks, staining, or ground disturbance, the same ground a walker would cover in hours.

Drones earn their keep on rig-up progress too. One flight at the end of a rig move gives you a photo record of the whole spread: where the iron sits, how the pad looks, what the crane set down where. When loads are moving in and out, the same eye that watches crane and lifting operations can watch the rig-up photos land in the daily report. And after a spill, aerial photos show the extent of the sheen, the drainage direction, and where the response crew should stage, without anyone walking through the affected area first.

The Part 107 rules

The rule set is built around one person: the remote pilot in command. To hold that job for hire you pass the FAA aeronautical knowledge test, clear TSA vetting, and keep a current remote pilot certificate, which means recurrent training every 24 months. The certificate is the paper that makes a commercial flight legal, and the inspector who asks for it is not looking for a reason to be difficult.

The operating rules are short and mostly common sense. Keep the aircraft in visual line of sight at all times. Fly in daylight, or civil twilight with anti-collision lighting on. Stay at or under 400 feet above ground level, clear of clouds, with at least three miles of visibility. Do not fly over people who are not part of the operation, and keep the aircraft under 55 pounds. When the operation needs more, the FAA can waive parts of the rules for specific flights: night work, flying beyond visual line of sight, flying over people. Waivers go through the Part 107 waiver process and take planning, so start early and file before you need the flight, not after.

Flying near structures and people

A location is a busy place, and the crew is the most important part of the plan. Brief the rig manager and the crew before the first flight: where the drone will fly, when, and for how long. No one should look up and be surprised by an aircraft over the pad. Check for temporary flight restrictions and keep well clear of helicopter traffic, which has right of way and does not see a small drone until it is too late. Keep the flight path over pipe and equipment, never over people, and end the flight if anyone walks under the aircraft.

Steel is hard on small drones. Structures block the GPS signal and the video link, and wind curls around tanks and derricks in ways a manual never predicts. Fly within the wind limits in the aircraft's manual, treat gusts as the real number, and set a hard ceiling for every job. A short flight that comes home clean beats a long one that ends in a scraped rotor and a lost camera.

The evidence file

Footage only proves something if it is filed. Keep three things for every flight: the flight log with date, time, location, pilot, aircraft, and conditions; the raw media, untouched; and the inspection report that names each asset and each finding. File them the same day, while the flight is fresh and the crew remembers what the footage shows.

The file matters because inspection history is the whole game. The next crew, the next contractor, and the auditor all want to see what was looked at, when, and what was found.
