Electrical Safety on the Rig: Generators, Panels, and Arc Flash
A land rig is a self-contained power plant: generator skids producing megawatts, switchgear cabinets packed with bus bars, SCR and VFD drives feeding the drawworks and pumps, and cable runs crossing a location that is wet, muddy, and covered in steel. The people who work around that power treat it as furniture because it is always on. It is the one energy source on a rig that is invisible, instant, and uninterruptible, and it is the one that most crews are least trained to respect.
The two ways electricity kills on a rig
The first is shock: a damaged cable, a wet hand on a tool body, a generator frame that is hot because a ground has failed. On a location where water is everywhere, the path to ground can be through a person, and the current does not need to be large to stop a heart. The second is arc flash: a fault in a panel that turns air into plasma, with heat that burns through clothing and pressure that throws a person across the room. Arc flash is the hazard people do not see coming, because the panel looked fine right up to the moment it was opened or racked.
What a rig electrical program has to contain
Start with the basics of the installation: live parts guarded, covers on panels, panels labeled with the voltage and the equipment they feed, and working space in front of every panel kept clear enough to open it safely. The third-party inspection guide on this site will tell you this is one of the first things an auditor checks, because it is visible, checkable, and wrong on a surprising number of rigs.
Then the energized work rule. Work on live electrical equipment should be a rare, justified exception, not the default. The crew has to prove that de-energizing is impossible, that the risk has been assessed, that the right PPE is worn, and that the task has an approved plan. NFPA 70E calls that the energized electrical work permit, and it is the same discipline as the lockout/tagout rules on this site: the exception is documented, authorized, and rare, and the rule is that energy gets killed before work happens.
Then the equipment that eats cables. Flexing, abrasion, and pinch points are what kill rig power cables, and a periodic inspection that looks at cable jackets, connectors, and grounds catches most of the problems before they become a shock. The inspection has to be recorded, because the record is what turns a routine check into a defense when something fails.
The cord, the ground, and the qualified person
Most electrical exposure on a rig is not in the switchgear; it is in the portable stuff. The cord that feeds the light plant, the welder lead that runs across the walkway, the extension cord with the taped splice, the tool body with the cracked case. The rules for these are simple and frequently violated: cords inspected before use, damaged cords removed from service instead of repaired with tape, tools grounded or double-insulated, and connections kept out of water. The person doing the inspection and the person opening the panels both have to be qualified for the work, and "qualified" means training that is documented, not seniority. The crew training gap
Rig crews get training on well control, H2S, and fire. Electrical safety is usually a one-hour video if it happens at all, and the people opening panels are often the same people who are not qualified to open them. The training and certification guide on this site lists the rig-specific cards that actually matter; electrical qualification should be on that list for anyone who touches a panel, and the qualification has to be renewed, because the hazard does not age well.
And the electrical side of maintenance belongs in the preventive maintenance schedule on this site: thermography on connections, torque checks on terminations, and generator load testing are PM tasks with dates, and the schedule is what keeps a generator failure from becoming an electrical incident.
