Ladders and Scaffolds on the Rig: The Climb Is Part of the Job
Most of a drilling location is flat ground, but the work happens in the air. Derrick hands climb to the crown. Tank farm hands go up ladders to gauging hatches. Rig-up crews walk scaffold decks a dozen feet up to hang lights and stage iron. Every one of those climbs is routine, and routine is the danger. Falls off ladders and scaffolds are a leading cause of serious injury in oil and gas work, and most falls are preceded by a broken rung, a loose tie-off, or a hand that let go for a second. The climb is part of the job, so the gear and the habit are part of the job too. OSHA 1926.451 requires every scaffold and scaffold component to support its own weight plus at least four times the maximum intended load, and it requires guardrails or a personal fall arrest system for any employee working on a scaffold more than 10 feet above a lower level. Under 1926.1053, portable ladder side rails must extend at least 3 feet above the upper landing surface, and ladders may be used only on stable and level surfaces unless they are secured against displacement.
Where ladders and scaffolds show up on a rig
A rig is a vertical workplace wearing a horizontal disguise. The derrick ladder is the most climbed on location, running the full height of the mast with rest platforms on taller units. Catwalks connect the rig floor to the pipe rack and the shaker house, a few feet off the ground and sometimes much higher. Tank batteries put ladders on every vessel. Crude tanks, water tanks, and mud pits all need gauging at the hatch, often off a fixed ladder bolted to the shell.
Scaffolds appear at rig-up and rig-down most of all. Crews erect tube and coupler scaffolding to reach lighting, electrical terminations, and standpipe work, and frame scaffolds show up for maintenance jobs around the plant side. Scaffold decks also get built on top of tank batteries and process skids where the permanent structure was not designed for walking. A fixed ladder, a portable ladder, and a scaffold each have different rules, so know which one is in front of you before you climb.
What the rules require
Ladder rules live in 1926.1053. Portable ladders are used only on stable and level surfaces unless they are secured so they cannot move. Side rails extend at least 3 feet above the landing so there is something to hold when you step off. Rungs are spaced evenly, and a damaged rung is a violation, not a maintenance request. Fixed ladders that rise more than 24 feet get a cage, a well, or a ladder safety system. The details matter less than the shape of the rule: the ladder has to be sound, secured, and sized for the climb.
Scaffold rules live in 1926.451. Every scaffold supports four times its maximum intended load, and the platform is fully planked with no gaps that could drop a tool or a boot. Guardrails go on open sides and ends when the deck is more than 10 feet above the lower level, with the top rail between 36 and 45 inches above the platform, and workers on high decks get a personal fall arrest system where the standard calls for it. The daily inspection habit
Inspection is a before-use act, not a once-a-week chore. Every ladder and scaffold gets a look before the first climb of the shift. Rungs and steps are checked for cracks, corrosion, and oil. Welds at the gussets get looked at. Bolts, pins, and lock rings are confirmed present. On a fixed ladder, check the tie-offs and cage attachments. On a scaffold, check that base plates sit on solid ground, that no leg is sinking or rocking, and that planks are fully seated with no splits. On a portable ladder, check the spreaders, the feet, and every rung.
Do the same check again after anything changes. A gust on a tall scaffold, a crane swing near the deck, a truck backing into a ladder, or a storm can shift gear that passed the morning check. When an inspection finds a defect, the gear comes out of service on the spot and gets tagged, not watched. A cracked rung is a report, not a conversation. Keeping walkways, railings, and ladders on a fixed rotation is part of the rig preventive maintenance schedule.
Records and accountability
The gear being sound matters less than the record that proves it was checked. That is what regulators, clients, and courts look at after a fall: the inspection tag, the completed checklist, the date, and the name of the person who signed. Tags show the last check date and the next one. Checklists run one line per item, rungs, welds, tie-offs, base support, and guardrails, each signed by the inspector. Incident reports close the loop. When a rung gives way, a scaffold shifts, or a hand slips, the event gets written up even when nobody was hurt. A near miss on a ladder is the cheapest safety lesson the site will ever get, and it only counts if it is recorded and read. The inspection record and the incident report together show a pattern: the same ladder flagged twice, the same scaffold moved without a recheck, the same section of catwalk with loose planking. That pattern is the actual product of the paperwork.
