Casing Tally and Tubular Records: Know What Went in the Hole
The casing tally is the rig's ledger: every joint of pipe run into the well, in order, with its length, its weight, its grade, and its serial number. It sounds like bookkeeping, and it is. But when a well later needs a window milled at a specific depth, or a plug set across a particular joint, or a regulator asks what exactly is behind the cement, the tally is the only document that answers. A tally that is off by one joint is a well that is unknown at the point where it matters most.
What the tally has to capture
A working tally is joint-level, not batch-level. Each joint gets its place in sequence, its measured length, its weight per foot, its grade and connection type, and its heat or serial number where the operator's policy requires traceability. Alongside the joints go the accessories: the float collar, the centralizers, the landing collar, the stage tool if there is one, each one a record that has to survive in the same document. The depths are cumulative, which is the whole point: joint 87 at 4,138 feet only means something if joints 1 through 86 added up correctly to get there.
The people who build the tally are the ones who have to be honest about it. The derrickhand counts the joints on the pipe rack, the driller reads the tally, the company man signs it, and the third-party tally service, when the operator uses one, keeps its own independent count. The cross-check is the control: two independent counts that agree are a tally; one count written down is an opinion.
Where tubular mistakes become well failures
Every tubular error has a price. A miscounted joint means the casing point is wrong, which means the shoe is not where the cement program assumed, which means the isolation that the cementing guide on this site describes starts from the wrong depth. A mixed grade in the string, a wrong weight section, a damaged connection that was not flagged in the tally: each one is a hidden defect that the well carries for life. The inspection records matter here as much as the dimensions. API RP 5C1 defines how casing is inspected, and the inspection report, not the sticker, is what belongs in the tally file.

Casing deserves the same treatment, with the difference that the drill pipe comes back out of the hole and casing does not. Once the tally is sealed in the well record, the only way to check it is a wireline log or a memory that has gone home on rotation.
The tally as an inventory and an audit trail
The tally is also the pipe inventory. The joints racked on location that did not go in the well are the next well's starting stock, and the difference between the delivered load and the run tally is shrinkage, damage, or a loading error that someone has to explain.
