Produced Water: Hauling, Disposal, and the Ticket Trail

For every barrel of oil a well produces, many wells in the major basins produce several barrels of water. The water is salty, often hot, sometimes corrosive, and it has to leave the location legally and reach a disposal point that is permitted to take it. The ticket trail is the only thing standing between a clean operation and a liability with a truck number on it.

USGS research on produced water documents the scale of the stream: oil and gas production generates enormous volumes of co-produced water, much of it highly saline, and its management is one of the defining water issues of the industry. The USGS tracks both the volumes and the chemistry.

The flow of water on a location

The water moves in a loop. It comes out of the well with the oil and gas, it is separated on location, it sits in tanks, and it is hauled away by truck or moved by pipeline. Every step in that loop is a place where the record can break: the meter on the tank battery, the ticket at the truck, the destination stamp at the disposal well.

Where the trail breaks

The failure modes are the same everywhere, and they are all record failures. Tickets that do not match the meter readings, because the volume was estimated instead of measured. Loads that go to a disposal facility without a permit, or to one whose permit expired. Leaks from a valve or a fitting on the tank battery, discovered days later. Haulers who are not on the approved list, moving water for a competitor's rate.

Who is liable when it spills

The operator is responsible for the water from the wellhead to the disposal point, even when a third party hauls it. A load dumped on a ranch road, a tank overfilled in the dark, a disposal well that takes more than its permit allows: the operator answers for all of it. The ticket trail is the evidence that decides whether the answer is "here is the record of where it went" or "we are still investigating."

Produced water management is a matching problem: meters to tickets, tickets to trucks, trucks to disposal points, and all of it on a daily cycle. It is exactly the kind of work that dies in a spreadsheet that one person owns and lives in a system that everyone works from. The water is hard on everything

Produced water is salty, and the salt is the quiet cost. The tanks, the valves, the fittings, and the truck trailers all corrode faster where produced water lives, and the corrosion shows up as leaks at the worst moments.
