Wire Rope Inspection: Catch the Cut Before It Catches You
A rig runs miles of wire rope. The drill line spoools through the crown and traveling blocks, the pickup and winch lines do the heavy rigging, and the crane lines work the loads. Every one of them has the same failure mode: it parts under load, and everything attached to it comes down with it.
What the inspector is looking for
The damage that kills wire rope is visible before the rope parts, if anyone looks. Broken wires, most often in the valleys between strands or at the crown of the rope. Corrosion and pitting, which weaken the steel from the outside in. Birdcaging, where the core pushes through the strands. Kinks, crushing, and flat spots. Heat damage, which shows as discoloration. And the quiet one: a reduction in diameter that means the rope is wearing from the inside.
The removal criteria in 29 CFR 1926.1413 and RP 9B give the numbers: how many broken wires in a lay length, how much diameter loss, when a rope is condemned outright. The inspector does not need to guess. The numbers exist. The job is to look, and to write down what was seen.
Where the damage hides
The worst damage is never at the part of the rope the crew sees all day. It is at the drum, where the bottom layers crush under the top layers. It is at the deadline anchor, where the rope bends around a small radius and corrodes in the weather. It is in the section that runs through the sheave a thousand times a day.

The record that makes inspection honest
An inspection you cannot find in the file did not happen. Each inspection record needs a date, the location on the rope, the findings, and the signature of the inspector. Alongside the inspections sits the rope's history: when it was installed, how many hours it has run, and the ton-miles if the operation tracks them.
The ton-mile record is what makes slipping and cut-off work. Slipping moves the wear point on the drum, and cut-off removes the worn sections at the ends. Done on a schedule, the practice multiplies rope life. Done from memory, it is a gamble with a rope that has a hidden history. The formal inspection with the removal criteria runs on a schedule, but the daily glance runs every tour. The driller and the crane operator see the rope all day, and the glance catches the things the formal inspection might find a week later: a fishhook in the drill line, a cut from a clamp, a crushed section where a truck drove over the catline. The glance costs nothing, and it feeds the record: a note that the rope was looked at, and what was seen.
The two habits are different, and both matter. The glance is the everyday look. The inspection is the documented one, with the criteria applied and the signature on the line.
